Need a weekend activity that’s more than your standard bar fare? Or a corporate outing that your colleagues will actually enjoy? It’s hard to find suitable and available space in Manhattan, particularly once the air gets cool. But we have some good news; you also don’t have to schlep all the way out to the wilds of New Jersey or the strip malls of Long Island.
Now, instead you should head to Sunnyside, Queens. In the near vicinity, you will find paintball, laser tag, golf, tennis, ice skating and more!
First up: paintball. Popular for bachelor parties, birthdays, or just plain blowing off some steam, New Yorkers love paintball! And its only indoor paintball is found in Sunnyside at NYC Paintball. Come with a couple of friends, or get a group of 8 for private play. For $42 on the weekend, you’ll get all you need to play for 3 hours on average. For all the fun and none of the mess, they also offer “Asylum” or “Arena” Laser Tag in three different laser tag venues. Open until 11 most nights and until 1 AM on Friday and Saturday, NYC Paintball is a great start to an adventurous night out in Sunnyside.
If you’re looking for something a little more low-key and family-friendly, but equally escapist, maybe City Ice Pavilion might be more your speed. Offering ice hockey, figure skating, skating school, ice skating parties and more, City Ice is a year-round rooftop ice rink covered with an ‘air dome’ overheard. Its NHL sized rink makes this a world-class skating facility (so you can actually SKATE – sorry Rockefeller Center rink!), located right in Queens. It’s $5 public skating (for 2-3 hours) also makes it a world-class bargain! A Yelp! Reviewer says it best: “All in all, a great time is to be had at City Ice Pavilion. Forget Wollman Rink and Bryant Park. Be comfortable, stay warm and stay indoors at City Ice.”
For another rooftop experience, Cityview Racquet Club is worth a look. Offering year-round play with 7 indoor Har-Tru courts, Cityview also boasts squash programs, a full fitness center, spa, and café and lounge. Its modern décor makes your gym or tennis experience much more than just a workout – you won’t want to leave (well, unless you’re coming to Courtyard after…)
And for the traditional social athletes out there, we can’t forget to mention golf. Flushing Meadows golf center is just down the road (or subway track) and is the city’s only lighted golf course. It is open until 1 AM in the summer – how very New York of them! This Pitch and Putt course is designed for casual golf outings, and is designed to be completed in less than 2 hours. And for the littlest golfers, an 18-hole mini golf course, landscaped as well as the real thing, makes for a fun family outing.
So, when you’re feeling sporty, head to Sunnyside. No matter what time of year or what the weather, there’s something for everyone here. Get in a round of golf, play some spirited paintball, or enjoy some rooftop sport…then come see us at Courtyard Ale House to enjoy our 24 craft beers on tap. Courtyard is the perfect “19th Hole,” or whatever the equivalent term is for paintballers, ice skaters, and tennis players.
If you’ve got some more energy, pick up some meat at Butcher Block (a NY Times favorite!) and come grill on our covered porch. If you’re just ready to sit back and be served (we understand!), hit the award-winning taco truck outside or order in from one of many local restaurants.
Laidback sports? Beer? Tacos? At laidback prices? We call that a good day.
